I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, high Google PageRank and Alexa ratings don’t necessarily equal quality or credibility.
I’ve been lurking the webmaster forums lately and can’t help but notice that so many aspiring webmasters seem to confuse the fact that your Google PageRank and Alexa ratings can be gained by white hat techniques such as creating custom content, aesthetically pleasing web design (as well as functionality), and generally giving people something to bookmark and spread the word about.
Take a step back, stop focusing so much on paid links, directories, and follow tags. Granted, they all have their rightful place in the world of internet traffic and search engine optimization *but* when you are at square one, focus on the following three attributes and your website will be a success:
1. Custom content that absolutely pertains to your niche.
2. Create a web site that is pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate.
3. Give users something to bookmark, and give them a way to spread the word.
In the grand scheme of things, this thing of ours (a.k.a. the internet) is not very difficult. I truly believe that the difficulty has been blown out of proportion, and the ones giving advice are generally in no position to be doing so to begin with.

Today’s blog post refers to an amazing thread by Brett Tabke over at Webmaster World. In this thread from 2003 Brett writes about the steps he takes within the first 12 months of launching a new website, and what makes it successful. You can view his thread here.
Here is a snippet:
“In another post Google as a Black Box Giacomo proposed that we talk too much theory and not enough application of it. So, lets skip the theory and get to what I know works from time proven methods on Google. I know the following system works 100% of the time with Google to attain rankings across a wide range of keywords. This is what I do with clients to build a successful site and has worked every time. The level of success will depend largely on the subject matter, it’s potential audience, and it’s level of competition on the net.
The following will build a successful site in 1 years time via Google alone. It can be done faster if you are a real go getter, or everyones favorite a self starter.”
Here is my favorite tip:
“Z) Build one page of quality content per day.
Starting to see a theme here? Google loves content, lots of quality content. Broad based over a wide range of keywords. At the end of a years time, you should have around 400 pages of content. That will get you good placement under a wide range of keywords, generate recip links, and overall position your site to stand on it’s own two feet.”
Even though this thread is over four years old, nearly all of it still applies today. This specific thread has probably made more internet millionaires (in my opinion), than any other on the internet.
